During the conference, take some time to visit the Matemateca Exhibition!
The exhibition planned for November-December 2014 is intended to mark the beginning of the collaboration between La Maison des Mathématiques et de l’Informatique de Lyon (MMI de Lyon) and Matemateca.
Since 2004, a team of professors from IME-USP has conceived, planned and manufactured a collection of “mathematical objects”, most of them interactive. In the beginning, the main focus was the undergraduate student. The apparatuses were intended not only to help learning topics covered in the regular curriculum but also to communicate mathematical theories and ideas to students who are not familiar with the (frequently heavy) mathematical language. The collection has been organized in an exhibition counting more than 30 different topics and occupying two hundred square meters. The broad range of themes presented includes current research topics in a variety of mathematical branches. Displays give the visitors basic information in a language intended to be simple but not simplistic. The text often allows different depths of information according to the visitor’s interest and knowledge. The exhibitions also count with undergraduate and graduate math students to guide groups of visitors.
The main concern of the Matemateca’s team is to enhance the understanding about the scope of Mathematics showing that it is much more than the topics covered in school or in college. The visit to an exhibition intends to arouse curiosity, enchant and surprise. The lecture character is avoided by exploring the multiple approaches offered by different mathematical subjects such as the beauty of form, the appeal of the challenge, the many practical applications. Difficult subjects are not avoided but are always made accessible to the great public.
